Join Craig Scott, MP, in a Fireside Chat on Democracy in Canada, Thursday, November 13th, 6pm

How do we engage more Canadians in the electoral process? What is the state of democratic reform in Canada? Why is the NDP so keen on mixed member proportional (MMP) system and what does it mean? Attendees will be able to ask Craig their own questions either during the fireside chat or afterwards over dinner.

Biography
Craig Scott was elected in a by-election on March 19, 2012, as the Member of Parliament for Toronto-Danforth, the riding previously represented by NDP Leader Jack Layton. Amongst his responsibilities in the federal NDP caucus, he is the Official Opposition Critic for Democratic and Parliamentary Reform and sits on the Procedures and House Affairs Committee of the House of Commons.
Formerly a law professor at Osgoode Hall Law School and a director of the Jack and Mae Nathanson Centre on Transnational Human Rights, Crime and Security, Scott has also been an advocate for human rights in Canada and abroad. Scott advised the African National Congress during the Apartheid era and subsequently contributed to drafting the post-apartheid Constitution of South Africa. He served as co-counsel for the government of Bosnia and Herzegovina in an International Court of Justice case and has also been involved in human rights issues relating to Afghanistan, Sri Lanka and Honduras. In Canada, he has advised groups in relation to the Charter of Rights and Freedoms and also assisted Maher Arar in his lawsuit against the Canadian government. Craig Scott was a Rhodes Scholar at St. John’s College, Oxford.
