Please join the Oxford and Cambridge Society of Toronto in our “Fire Side Chat” series, welcoming our panel who will address the question “Climate Change: Will we make it?” Our panel members are:
John Godfrey: Special Advisor for Climate Change to the Government of Ontario and Chair of Ontario’s Climate Action Group
Adèle Hurley: Past Director of the Program on Water Issues at the Munk School of Global Affairs at the University of Toronto.
Keith Stewart: Greenpeace Canada and University of Toronto School of Environment, Sessional Lecturer

Panel Member Bios
John Godfrey is Special Advisor for Climate Change to the Government of Ontario and Chair of Ontario’s (CAG) Climate Action Group.
John has had an extensive and accomplished career dedicated to public service that spans over 30 years. He was first elected to the federal House of Commons as the member of parliament for Don Valley West in 1993. He was re-elected four times, holding the position until 2008. From 2003-04, Godfrey was the parliamentary secretary to the prime minister and from 2004-06, he served in cabinet as minister of state for Infrastructure and Communities. In that role, he was responsible for overseeing the distribution of $5.6 billion for strategic, municipal, rural and border infrastructure programs.
Prior to being elected to Parliament, Godfrey served as vice-president of the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research. He was also editor of the Financial Post for four years and spent 14 years in academia, holding various positions at the University of Kings College, including associate professor, president and vice-chancellor.
Godfrey has been involved in many community and public service organizations, including president of the Council for Canadian Unity, a board of directors member for the National Film Board, a co-founder of the Committee of Concerned Nova Scotians for Justice and a board of directors member for Pollution Probe.
Most recently, Godfrey was the headmaster of the Toronto French School. He has a bachelor of arts (honours) in modern history and English literature from the University of Toronto, a master’s degree in modern history from Oxford University, and a Ph.D. in modern history from Oxford University

Adèle Hurley, C.M., FRSC is a Past Director of the Program on Water Issues at the Munk School of Global Affairs at the University of Toronto. In the 1980s, during the early days of the Reagan Administration, Adèle moved to Washington and co-founded the Canadian Coalition on Acid Rain. For several years she worked on a successful campaign that brought about amendments to the US Clean Air Act, as well as regulations that reduced acid rain-causing pollutants from large Canadian emitters. In the early 1990s she was appointed to the Board of Ontario Hydro. In 1995, she was appointed by the Prime Minister’s Office to serve as Canadian Co-Chair of the International Joint Commission, which oversees Canada/US Boundary water issues under the Boundary Waters Treaty of 1909. Adèle has served as a member of the Canadian Federal Government’s International Trade Advisory Committee – Task Force on Environment and Trade Policy, the Board of Directors of the Ontario Power Authority, and the Water Advisory Board of the Columbia Basin Trust.
She is Member of the Order of Canada and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada.
Keith Stewart, is a University of Toronto School of Environment, Sessional Lecturer; ENV 350H Energy Policy and Environment. Mr. Stewart has worked as an energy policy analyst and advocate for various non-profit groups for over a decade and currently works for Greenpeace Canada where he promotes the efficient use of renewable energy. He is the co-author of the book Hydro: The Decline and Fall of Ontario’s Electric Empire and author of numerous articles, reports and op eds on climate change policy and politics.
