Celebrate the 800th anniversary of Magna Carta – Thursday, 15 October 6-8pm

October 15, 2015 @ 6:00 PM EDT - 8:00 PM EDT EDT

Celebrate the 800th anniversary of the Magna Carta on Thursday, 15 October 6-8pm

Join the Oxford and Cambridge Society of Toronto on a visit to see the Magna Carta at Fort York National Historic Site followed by a scholarly discussion about its importance to us today.

The Magna Carta and its companion document, the Charter of the Forest, set the groundwork for many concepts that continue to define democratic life today. As symbols of justice, they also act as powerful reminders that those who govern do so only by the consent of the people.

After a tour of the bilingual exhibition we will have an opportunity to hear from two experts on the historical impact of the Magna Carta.  We have a room reserved at the Fort for this discussion from 7 till 8pm.

Our speakers:

Robin Sutherland-Harris researches the production, use, and reception of a wide variety of legal documents in twelfth- and thirteenth-century England, with a focus on bringing the concerns of social and book history to the study of archival documents. She is currently the head research assistant at the Documents of Early England Data Set (DEEDS) Project, and has taught history courses at all three campuses of the University of Toronto. https://utoronto.academia.edu/RobinSutherlandHarris

Dr. Jonathan Herold’s field of research is the study of pragmatic aspects of early medieval literate culture, particularly early medieval memorial inscriptions and archival records.  He currently teaches courses about medieval history and culture in Trinity College in the University of Toronto and Glendon College of York University. https://independent.academia.edu/JonathanHerold
