Please join the Oxford and Cambridge Society of Toronto and their Friends in our “Fire Side Chat” series to hear Nathaniel Erskine-Smith MP, Beaches- East York, in a Fireside Chat on being a Rookie Parliamentarian and on the Liberal Government, Tuesday, January 17th, 6:00pm.  Nate will present his thoughts on “the importance of independence in the House” and then take questions from the floor.

Biography

Nathaniel (Nate) Erskine-Smith
Member of Parliament for Beaches-East York

Nate sits on the Public Safety & National Security Committee and the Access to Information, Privacy, & Ethics Committee. He is also the President of the Canadian Group of the Inter-Parliamentary Union. In this role, he will represent Canada at parliamentary conferences around the world.

Nate became the M.P. on October 19, 2015, after a successful grassroots open nomination in December 2014.

He has strong roots in Beaches-East York, where he was raised and has lived most of his life. Nate attended Bowmore and Malvern, grew up playing baseball at Ted Reeve and Stan Wadlow, and his parents Sara Erskine and Lawrence Smith are well respected local teachers. Nate lives in the riding with his wife Amy, a chef and nutrition professor at George Brown College, and the director of the supper club program at Gilda’s Club Greater Toronto.

Previously, Nate was a lawyer at a commercial litigation firm downtown Toronto.

He obtained his B.A. (Politics) and J.D. (Law) from Queen’s University, where he pitched for the varsity baseball team. After working at a large Bay Street law firm, Nate obtained his B.C.L. (Master of Laws), with distinction, from the University of Oxford where he studied political philosophy and constitutional law, and pitched for both the University and City baseball teams.

Upon his return to Toronto from the U.K., Nate spent time volunteering for the Canadian Civil Liberties Association before returning to full-time practice. He has fought public interest matters in court, he has provided volunteer legal work to a range of clients and causes, and he has been a guest speaker at both Malvern and East York Collegiate in law and politics.
